Darrell "Buzz" Smith

September 20, 1934 - January 25, 2025

Darrell “Buzz” Smith of Grangeville, Idaho passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, January 25th, 2025. Buzz was born to Wesley and Alvina “Dolly” Smith at their family home in Monroe, Washington on September 20, 1934. He grew up in Monroe as one of nine children: Joel, Larry, Neva, Buzz, Dixie, Jean, Cole, Brady and Nola.

In December 1952 Buzz joined the Navy Reserves, transferring to the CB division after boot camp in San Diego. During his time as a reservist in the navy, he was drafted by the army receiving a medical discharge from the army in 1956 and an honorable discharge from the navy in 1960.

It was during his service that Buzz began to court a good friend of his younger sister Jean’s, her name was Shirley, who he would later marry on December 15th, 1956, and spend the remaining 68 years of his life with.

Buzz was a man of many talents. He was a logger, he worked at Boeing, he was an electrician and briefly ranched in Wyoming. He returned to Monroe and resumed his career as an electrician until his retirement in 2007.

Buzz was preceded in death by his parents and three of his brothers.
He leaves behind his wife Shirley, daughter Deborah (Tom) Humphries, sons, Bart Smith, Bret (Lisa) Smith, and Paul (Paula) Judson and daughter Brenda (Eric) Klos. Grandsons Clifford, Spencer, Trevor, Dylan, Dakota and Sage. Granddaughters, Breanna, Camby and Dallas. He also leaves behind ten great grandchildren with another due in March and a number of nieces, nephews and family.

A celebration of Buzz’s life will be held at the Grangeville United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 1st, 2025, at 1:00 pm, by Reverend Luann Howard with cookies, coffee, tea and memories to be shared after services.
