LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Why do so many kids from other cities attend Snohomish Schools?

STUDENT VARIANCES

To the Editor:
Are you in or out?
It has come to my attention that many students are obtaining “variances” to attend Snohomish schools even though they reside out of the Snohomish School District! Why is our school district allowing this to happen? Could it be that there is some recruiting of athletes going on here? Don’t we have enough quality athletes that live in our own District? It makes me feel like some parents, AAU coaches and/or students may be doing some “de facto” recruiting once they realize the policy of our school district, which apparently is to approve most all “variances” for enrollment.
As I understand it, Glacier Peak has about 450 out-of-district students!
How can this be just and fair to the families and students who live in the District?
My heart feels for the young student-athlete residing in our District that loses his or her spot to a student residing elsewhere.
Also, these variances open up all kinds of monetary questions as well with regard to salaries, improvements due to extra students, taxes, etc.
Are we the Snohomish School District or the Everett-Mukilteo-Monroe-Northshore-Snohomish School District?
