Eighty-two people, if not more, died while homeless in Snohomish County last year. Nine were known to be veterans.
The names of people county sources know of were honored at a vigil Dec. 20 that the county government holds annually.
The county conducts an unscientific count of people in homelessness each year called the Point-in-Time Count. This year’s will be Jan. 23.
Last year, 1,611 people in homelessness were found and interviewed by volunteers. Of those, 625 were sleeping in a vehicle or sleeping outdoors, and of those, 275 were in Everett at the time.
The figure fluctuates a bit. In 2023, the count interviewed 1,285 people living in homelessness.
People experiencing chronic homelessness — classified as more than 12 months of being homeless or having multiple long stints of homelessness over the past 36 months — represent about 60 percent of the county’s homeless population.
The tally of deceased homeless people honored at the vigil has broadly increased over the years. It has partially grown as more sources are providing names, the Tribune was told previously. The list is compiled through news stories of homeless deaths and from sources who work with the homeless population.
