SNOHOMISH — After a handful of years without an Outreach Deputy in Snohomish due to the previous officer retiring and staffing levels being low, the position is finally filled by Deputy Taylor Davis. He began Feb. 1.
Last year, Chief Nathan Alanis made it a priority to fill this once-vacant position.
The community outreach deputy is a way for the public to interact with the Snohomish Police Department in a way that doesn’t require a crime or a 911 call to have an interaction.
“The majority of the public only deal with the police in an emergency situation and don’t know that we can assist in ways to increase safety and security, to reduce the likelihood of an emergency happening,” the department’s
Admin. Sgt. Chris Veentjer said. “The main goal for Deputy Davis would be to reduce the barriers for community members to be able to contact the police for assistance and guidance so that we can increase the overall safety and security of the city.”
He will also be the main contact for addressing chronic complaints that affect the quality of life in the city and do not necessarily rise to the level of a 911 call.
“We are excited to introduce Deputy Davis as our new Community Outreach Deputy at the Snohomish Police Department,” Alanis said. “In this role, Deputy Davis will focus on building strong relationships with community members through active participation in city events and outreach programs. He will assist with educating our community on important public safety topics while creating a welcoming and supportive place for all of our residents.”
Davis was a police officer before taking on this new role just a few weeks ago.
“I have always been looking for something else to do besides patrol something,” Davis said. “I want to do something that I believe can also have an impact. When I saw the position of Outreach Deputy I figured it was right up my wheelhouse, I really love helping people out and interacting with them. ”
Davis will be doing just that, such as hosting open houses, attending neighborhood meetings, assisting at city events, and being the contact for the business community to voice their concerns.
One of Davis’ most significant impacts will be seen through creating an opportunity for everyone to be heard and their concerns to be addressed.
Over the weekend, Davis attended the city’s resource fair, an opportunity for the community to connect with local organizations and learn about services, and for Davis to begin his outreach.
