SNOHOMISH — The city has asked its contracted architecture firm for its future Civic Campus for design revisions that decrease the total pricetag, Mayor Linda Redmon shared with the City Council last week. The planned campus, which is scheduled to be built at Third Street and Pine Avenue later this decade, would become Snohomish’s new City Hall, Police Department and Public Works shop.
An initial design plan shown to the public in January penciled out to $72.7 million to design, build and implement the new main building and new city shop. January’s design showed a three-story main building with woodbeam and concrete features.
City administrator Heather Thomas-Murphy said city leaders identified ways the three-story building could be scaled back and the architects are now working on updates. She didn’t have any exact details of the new footprint size as the plans are not yet done.
The architects were asked to revise the plans, but weren’t given a direct target price to meet, Thomas-Murphy said Friday.
The architects’ new schematic and new cost estimates, plus revisions to the city’s funding plan, will be presented at a City Council meeting in April, Thomas-Murphy said.
By April 1, the city may have answers whether it has secured $11.5 million in new funding grants toward the project.
U.S. Rep. Suzan DelBene requested a $3 million federal capital earmark, and state Sen. John Lovick is asking for a state capital request of $8.5 million.
A preliminary funding plan discussed in October suggested taking out long-term municipal bonds to fund a significant portion of the project and using low-interest grants for another part.
Separately, Fire District 4 is moving along with a new headquarters station at Fourth Street and Pine Avenue on the other end of the block. A groundbreaking ceremony for that is scheduled for Saturday, March 29. Together, these would form a Public Safety and City Services Campus.
