LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The target shifted for marijuana arrests

MARIJUANA AND THE LAW

To the Editor:

Yes, folks, just like The Cultural Revolution, you can once again be arrested for Cannabis. You may think we won U.S. President Richard Nixon’s $1 trillion War on Drugs. Marijuana retail shops are all up and down Highway 99. Don’t be fooled.

Sixty years ago, your whole gang could be rounded up at a weed smoking party. In the 1970s, up to state legalization, only a fine.

Drug criminalization was going sour for the law. They thought, ‘how could we go back to the good old days of Flower Power? Used to be you could throw those Hippie Dudes in a jail cell.’ Well now police use existing DUI enforcement. They know, sooner or later, a stoner is going to smoke dope and try to drive his automobile. Only a British Rock-N-Roll star is not going to the slammer and get a ticket instead.

The only reason some states let up on green bud is: It’s been big time since The Beatles. Everyone should know better.
