SNOHOMISH — The city happily found there are no leaded pipes in the city’s drinking water system. No private water service pipes from the water main to the property building appeared to have leaded connections either.
More than 2,200 properties were checked during 2023 and 2024 to create a comprehensive 45-page report.
The findings were largely compiled through field verifications to physically inspect connectors. Most service pipes were copper or plastic, with some being galvanized steel.
Leaded pipes are today banned in the U.S. As a rule of thumb, homes built after 1986 would not have lead pipes.
A federal initiative requires cities to inventory any leaded pipes, and looks to replace them. Flint, Michigan’s contaminated drinking water scandal provoked the federal Environmental Protection Agency to instruct local governments to thoroughly search for lead pipes at every address.
