The driver who led a police chase before causing U.S. 2 to be closed for hours Oct. 1 was promptly hauled before an Everett District Court judge last week.
The man, from Seattle, and his girlfriend had given a Sultan resident a ride home overnight Monday, Sept. 30.
The Seattle man’s street name is “True,” and he was an acquaintance of the Sultan man, who’s in his mid-30s.
That morning, 911 got a call from the Sultan man crying out that his 2007 Mercedes Benz sedan was stolen while his mom drove.
The Seattle man rushed through Sultan, weaving in and out of oncoming traffic on U.S. 2. A deputy began pursuit, and they rushed through Monroe. He wrecked on U.S. 2 westbound at Westwick Road.
U.S. 2 was closed for more than five hours for the investigation, snarling morning traffic both directions.
Along on the ride, the police report said, the Sultan man was expected to hand over money, and at one time had a gun pointed at his head, according to the Sultan man.
The man has not been formally charged in Everett District Court. Police want to charge him with motor vehicle theft, assault with a gun for pointing it at the Sultan man, and two other charges he was booked into jail for.
Because the man had not been formally charged with an arraignment as of Thursday, Oct. 3, the Tribune is not printing his legal name. The girlfriend was not charged with a crime.
