LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Have your say on Homestead Park

To the Editor:

Snohomish residents living west of Avenue D will soon be getting their first community park at 2000 Ludwig Rd.

The Snohomish City Council is set on Dec. 3rd to award a $283,000 contract to GGLO, LLC for the final Master Plan design for Homestead Park.  However, instead of GGLO, LLC conducting the public outreach, city staff has already decided its preferred alternative as follows:

1. No dog park under the power lines.

2. Demolishing the homestead farmhouse the City recently spent $250,000 to remodel and then spent $50,000 for a new roof for the historic farmhouse which currently brings in $30,000 a year in rental income.

3. Establishing a “disc (frisbee) golf” area among the trees.

Ironically, in a small city staff survey conducted at the Farmer’s Market, frisbee golf was the least liked activity presented in the survey.  (A dog park and pickleball, tennis, and basketball courts were never offered in the survey.)

Residents should send their own preferred alternative to the council prior to the next Dec. 3rd meeting.  Or better yet, the City staff should first conduct a real public survey (via a utility bill mailer or the City of Snohomish Magazine) before any final design of the park is approved.
