Monroe football advances to State

A crush of Monroe Bearcat defenders get onto Bellarmine Lions junior Elias Givins during a critical game Saturday, Nov. 9 at Monroe’s home field to decide which team advances to state. The Lions came to play, and their 35-41 loss was closer than this photo would indicate.
The Bearcats opened the scoring in the first period but the Lions came back and came back yet again in the see saw first half. Neither team scored in the second period.  In the third quarter Monroe outscored the Lions 14 - 6, but the Lions came back in the final period to bring in 16 points to Monroe’s 13. Monroe had enough of a lead to maintain the win.
Monroe will enter the first round of 3A State seeded 14th, and will face No. 3-seeded Eastside Catholic on Eastside’s home field in Sammamish on Saturday, Nov. 16. The Stanwood Spartans also got into State, and are seeded 16th. They may be trampled by No. 1-ranked Bellevue at a game not yet formally scheduled.
In 4A, the Lake Stevens Vikings entered State in the No. 6 seed. They’ll face No. 11 Mead High School in a game on Lake Stevens’ field Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. Lake Stevens and Arlington are the two Snohomish County schools in the State tourney.
In 2A, the Archbishop Murphy Wildcats entered State after taking a 59-7 victory over Bremerton Nov. 9. The Wildcats entered in the No. 5 seed and will face Orting. As the higher seed, it is expected Archbishop Murphy would have the home field.
