To the Editor:
Regarding the July 24 Tribune letter, “Port’s ability to help fund projects will be beneficial”:
The writer reports the Port Authority has three major foci: environmental cleanup, economic development, and transportation. And then she listed examples of the Port’s accomplishments over the years.
Karen Guzak, Chair of the Political Action Committee “Port Expansion for a Vibrant Future,” revealed in a June 26th Tribune article examples of how the Port could benefit Snohomish area residents with the passage of the Port’s Proposition 1:
1. Environmental cleanup. The Port could clean up the city shop site on First Street. (Fact-check. The City administrator confirmed the shop site is not known to be contaminated and does not need the Port to clean it.)
2. Economic Development. The Port could attract a boat (like a Mississippi gambling paddle wheel riverboat) to visit Snohomish by building a floating dock and holding weddings and be a place for events. She also added the Port could help attract a “boutique hotel” into town.
3. Transportation. A port’s primary function is the movement of cargo via land, sea, and air. So airport enhancements at Paine, Harvey, and Arlington would be at the top of the Port’s list of priority projects.
In conclusion, are the promises of a boat and dock and a boutique hotel and airport expansions worth the imposition of a new forever tax upon voters, costing hundreds of dollars per year?
I say no, don’t buy it.
Vote to reject the Port’s Prop. 1 tax, hidden in the ballot language.
