Herald newsroom staff layoffs on pause for more union bargaining

EVERETT — Ten news staff at The Herald newspaper in Everett are in limbo, but did not get the axe last week like the paper’s ownership intended.
They are members of a union, and current required union bargaining has suspended any layoffs.
The union had its first bargaining session June 28. The next one will be as soon as July 12, Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild union director Kaitlin Gillespie said.
The Herald’s relatively new owners Carpenter Media Group announced June 19 it would lay off half of the Herald’s news staff, leading to public scrutiny and a two-day strike by the reporting staff.
