Food bank in Monroe broken into

MONROE —  The phone call made Matt Campbell’s heart sink.
That new glass door they put in yesterday? Somebody smashed it overnight and stole the contractor’s tools, the Sky Valley Food Bank director learned.
The food bank is in the final weeks of a major remodel and expansion.
The door was $1,200, and it was meant to bring more sunlight in to make the lobby more welcoming.
“It’s $1,200 coming out of the food bank that would have gone for food,” Campbell said.
They’re putting in a hardy steel door this time around, Campbell said.
“It won’t delay our opening — we won’t let it,” he said.
They hope to open the renovated food bank fully by mid-February.
Thieves are causing headaches overnight each week at the food bank, mainly going after its two vehicles by siphoning gas. The truck’s used for collecting groceries for the food bank and its cargo van is used for food delivery service to clients in Index.
A police case is active. Campbell said their security cameras didn’t catch who broke the door. The theft of the contractor’s tools is being handled privately.

The Sky Valley Food Bank’s brand-new front window was smashed Jan. 23 or 24.
