Monroe Police doubles up on community service officers

MONROE — The Police Department doubled its team of community service officers from one to two earlier this month.
Community Service Office (CSO) Amanda Johnston was hired Jan. 1. and department administrative assistant Macy Haverly became the second CSO starting Feb. 1.
A CSO’s beat includes parking infractions, animal control and cruelty investigations, crime prevention and special event coordination. They’re dispatched to non-emergency requests during daytime hours.
“Returning to having two CSOs will enable us to offer seven-day-a-week coverage, enhancing services for our community,” Cmdr. Paul Ryan said.
And, it gives “extra eyes and ears for our department,” Ryan said.
A city budget adjustment added the second CSO position. Monroe was down to one CSO for one dozen years due to a budget cut. The department currently has 45 employees: 35 commissioned officers and 10 professional staff.
Monroe’s former CSO Gaby Escalante is at the Police Academy undergoing training to become a fully commissioned police officer with Monroe Police, Ryan said.
