Damages to Zion Lutheran from vandalism topped $30,000

SNOHOMISH — A man angered with Zion Lutheran Church on Avenue A who has persistently vandalized it caused $39,000 worth of damage earlier this year. He’s thrown eggs mostly, but also other objects, at the church.

He came back Dec. 15 to egg the church before it welcomed guests for the Snohomish Parlor Tour.

The $39,000 estimate was to repair the paint damage to the door and trim. The estimate was part of court documents related to the church asking authorities to formally bar the man from being near the church. They asked to protect the church before Christmas.

The man has been responsible for 15 vandalism incidents against the church and a Snohomish resident from July until his arrest Oct. 9, police say, and then came back with more vandalism in December.

The police report said the man was terminated as a teacher at Zion’s K-12 school two years ago over his comments. A person familiar with the situation said the man tried appealing the termination but exhausted his options.

The Tribune knows the man’s name. The newspaper is not naming him in this story because it is understood as of Dec. 26 he still has not been formally charged in court through arraignment.
