SNOHOMISH — The longstanding Panther sign in front of Snohomish High School is getting refurbished by a student-led class in the Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center.

The refurbishment includes metal fabrication and painting, said school district spokeswoman Kristin Foley, who saw some of the work.

Part of the old sign will be retained. The metal part will be powder-coated, Foley said.

Delivery and installation are still to be scheduled.

In 1993, Fred Bero of Concrete, Wash., a friend of Coach Dick Armstrong’s, carved the cedar wood sign using a chainsaw and rotor, the Tribune reported at the time. Linda Peters designed it. Snohomish High moms painted it.

By 2023, it had notable rot. The legs were rotting, and the hard-carved Panther atop wobbled like it wasn’t affixed.

A fundraiser by former Snohomish High principal Eric Cahan and current principal Nate DuChesne to fix the sign raised $13,000 last year.
