St. John’s Episcopal welcomes public to see fully renovated church May 14

SNOHOMISH —  For over a century, St. John’s Episcopal Church at 913 Second St., has been a historical landmark. After extensive fundraising, a mix of repairs, renovations and new construction – well past its initial of $2.4 million estimate, St. John’s is ready to re-open its doors, and wherever you are in your faith journey, you are welcome there.
“We were working to take care of the immediate needs first, including the most pressing concern which was the steeple, which was leaning toward Second Street. With additional concerns of the electrical system, new handicapped ADA bathrooms and entrances and exits, with 2 new lifts and ramps,” said Steve Kenagy, the on-site construction manager for St. John’s.
“The whole Idea is to retain the historical feel of the church,” Chris Bee said.
St John’s was built in 1893 for $250 and has since undergone several renovations and improvements. Its parish hall, built in 1929, has served a basketball court, dining room, dance floor and general community gathering space, including the Community Kitchen which serves meals for the needy.
St. John’s is one of the earliest churchs in the Diocese of Olympia, and one of the few in Washington to operate continuously as a church since its construction in 1893.
“Being a church that is over 130 years old… our building had compelling needs for repairs and upgrades. We want to grow the opportunities to provide more service and ministries” wrote John Gray, chair of the building committee and current Vestry Sr. Warden.
According to Steve Kenagy, “this renovation has been like a monster” trying to connect all access levels of the church, including the church offices, Sunday school and Nursery. Working on a historic building, uncovers all sorts of surprises. One part of the foundation was on a dirt floor. The electrical system was also a monster and was a miracle the building did not burn down. Luckily St John’s is a place of miracles and blessings.
St. John’s is welcoming anyone on their faith journey to join them as they re-open for services Sunday May 14 (Mother’s Day) at 10 a.m. St. John’s is continuing to work on other areas, such as their beautiful stained glass windows. St John’s wanting to grow with the community offering more service and ministries.
