Monroe area for a few families to sleep in cars proposed

MONROE — A proposal at St. Vincent de Paul’s site in west Monroe would set up a space for a small number of homeless families to safely sleep in their cars afterhours to the left of the thrift store.
The families have children who attend schools through the McKinney-Vento Act, an act which lets students stay at their home school even if their disrupted living situation puts them out of the area.
An open house meeting about the proposal will be Thursday, May 11 from 5 to 6 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul's resource center, 17150 W. Main St., Suite B, between the thrift store and 911 Driving School.
The meeting time was rescheduled from a late afternoon time last week to May 11 in the evening after negative public response about the timing.
The proposal is for a maximum of four cars at one time. Parking times would be 9 p.m.to 7 a.m. when the parking lot is gated off. A Port-A-Potty would be provided. A code of conduct would need to be followed to stay in the lot. Emergency access to open the gate would be through Knox Boxes.
The meeting relates to a temporary encampment permit St. Vincent de Paul applied for to conduct the safe parking program.
