UPDATE: Monroe Schools is now starting foodservice July 5.
SNOHOMISH COUNTY — It used to be that summertime meant no lunch for some children out of school.
Programs in Snohomish, Monroe and Everett make sure hunger doesn’t strike. Snohomish will be opening service June 26; Everett and Monroe on July 5 . These are free to everyone under 18, regardless of income.
Snohomish's "Kids Café" brings lunches in a food van to more rural areas such as the Circle H Mobile Home Park, a neighborhood with more than 50 children who live north of Snohomish city limits a half-mile away from Three Lakes Road. The district also sends a food van to the Three Rivers Mobile Home Park in the Echo Lake area.
Other sites with free breakfast and lunch for kids are at the Snohomish Library, 311 Maple Ave., and Valley View Middle School (14308 Broadway Ave. SE.)
Breakfast is from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the library and Valley View. Lunchtime periods vary by site, but try coming at 11:30 a.m. and again at noon. See www.sno.wednet.edu/kidscafe for exact times. Children must be present to get a meal.
Snohomish Schools began its summer meal program in 2010, and serves more than 20,000 meals each year.
Books: The district will let students come to all of its elementary school libraries once a week every Wednesday starting July 5 from 9-11 a.m. to borrow books. Adults must come with the student.
