Few cities allow fireworks for New Year’s Eve

If you’re thinking of ringing in the New Year with fireworks, few cities allow them today.
In Monroe, consumer-grade fireworks are allowed Dec. 31 from 6 p.m. to Jan. 1 at 1 a.m. Sultan, Stanwood, Darrington and Granite Falls allow fireworks New Year’s Eve, too.
Nowhere in unincorporated Snohomish County is it legal to discharge fireworks on New Year’s Eve. The cities of Snohomish and Lake Stevens do not allow fireworks on New Year’s Eve, either, according to their city codes, just on the night of the Fourth of July.
Cities that prohibit any fireworks are Edmonds, Everett, Gold Bar, Lynnwood, Marysville, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace and Mukilteo.
Fireworks are prohibited on all school grounds and city parks.
For safety, people should keep a bucket of water nearby.
Instead of a lighter, some experts suggest using a “punk stick” — it’s a long stick that smolders. These are often sold at fireworks stands.
Call 911 to report a fire or serious injury caused by fireworks. Call 425-407-3999 to report non-emergencies.
