SNOHOMISH — Fire District 4's future fire station will be on Pine Avenue between Third and Fourth streets, pending the close of a land deal to buy the block.
Some of the block is boarded-up homes, and one-half is the former Steuber Distributing Co. All 23 parcels are under one landowning group which
includes members of the family that ran Steuber's for decades.
The agreement is to buy the 5.6 acres for $4.3 million "as-is," and carries a threat of eminent domain.
The $4.3 million was arrived at from the district's land appraisal. More negotiations that revise the price could happen.
It will be a long while before any site work would happen, Snohomish Fire Chief Don Waller said.
Fire District 4 is purchasing the site to build a fire station bigger than the undersized one at 427 Maple Ave., which ultimately would be decommissioned and used for other fire district needs after the Pine Avenue station opens.
The city of Snohomish intends to relocate city services and put a police station on the same block. It has a contract to pay the fire station for about 60% of the purchase cost, which could be about $2.4 million, to get about 60% of the block.
The fire station would be built at about Pine and Fourth within the block.
The city buildings would go at about Pine and Third, kitty-corner from Averill Field.
These placements are written in a city-FD4 agreement.
The land buy is scheduled to close sometime in summer if there’s no interruptions.
The fire district is buying the land with cash from its reserves.
It is expected to take a few years before the new fire station is built and ready to go into operation.
