SNOHOMISH — Yes, there will be homecoming activities at Snohomish High this year.
But unlike how it’s been done lately, the homecoming dance is going to be an informal party under a decision by the school’s student body government.
The annual semi-formal dance is moving back to winter. (Prom is untouched.)
A semi-formal dance used to always happen in winter until about 10 years ago when the student body government flipped it with the informal spirit dance from homecoming week, district spokeswoman Kristin Foley said.
Homecoming week’s other activities are still happening. The annual Serpentine, the all-student parade through town, starts Friday, Oct. 7 around 10:45 a.m.
An online petition is circulating asking to hold the semi-formal dance at homecoming. Students began reacting after learning of the changes near the start of the year at a student assembly.
For most of the school’s 1,550 or so students, this may be their first official high school dance because COVID-19 restrictions squelched any chance these past two years.
The No. 1 reason student body government leaders switched the schedule is to have the first school dance of the year be open and meant for all students, Foley said.
The mood of a semi-formal, comparatively, can mean having to buy dressier clothes and could mean bringing a date.
Prom remains in spring.
A school rumor was floating around that prom is canceled, too, Foley said.
Glacier Peak High School’s homecoming week is Sept. 10.
