SNOHOMISH — A Snohomish man is recovering from a serious dirt biking accident earlier this month, but it won’t be cheap.
Spencer Helfrich and his friends were riding at the Beverly Sand Dunes in Mattawa, southeast of Ellensburg.
All was going well until Helfrich, a Snohomish High grad, was tossed off his bike and landed onto the sand and rocks. He ended up tearing through a kidney, hurt his spine, broke his clavicle, broken ribs and had a concussion.
Helfrich had to be airlifted to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee. Once he arrived at Central Washington Hospital, he was then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Due to Spencer Helfrich only having one functioning kidney, as of last week he was still recovering in the ICU at Harborview.
Soon after arriving at the Seattle hospital, his wife Samantha Helfrich started a GoFundMe campaign to cover for medical expenses.
The fundraiser has raised more than $33,000 so far.
“The support from our friends and community in regards to this situation has been amazing. We are so thankful and grateful for the money that is being raised for his recovery,” Samantha Helfrich said over the phone.
The road for Spencer Helfrich will be long and difficult, but he is expected to recover.
