SNOHOMISH — People can apply for a seat on the school board starting this week.
The opening comes from board member Brandy Hekker submitted her resignation late last month. She had joined the board in fall 2018 as an appointee to fill a vacant seat after volunteering in schools for years.
To apply, you must live in Hekker’s District No. 4, a large area that includes downtown, Cathcart and Clearview east of Highway 9, and the Three Lakes, Machias and Dutch Hill areas. The district’s formal boundaries run east of Maple Avenue and south of Three Lakes Road. The boundaries cut across the city along Fourth Street and go south to include all areas east of Highway 9.
The deadline to apply is Aug. 9.
Applications are available starting Friday, July 29 online at sno.wednet.edu or pick one up at the Snohomish School District’s headquarters, 1601 Ave. D.
The school board plans to interview the finalist candidates in mid-August and the appointee’s first board meeting will be Aug. 24.
The five-member board sets policies, hires personnel, adopts the annual budget and selects the district superintendent.
Hekker passed on commenting about her resignation. She’s staying in the Snohomish area.
You can watch the board in action Wednesday, July 27 or Wednesday, Aug. 10. Their meetings start at 6 p.m. at district headquarters, 1601 Ave. D.
A public thank-you reception for Hekker is scheduled for the end of the July 27 school board meeting.
