Snohomish outlines its future road plans

SNOHOMISH — Two future road projects voters recently approved funding for through renewing a city sales tax measure will arrive by 2025, according to a city outline.
A stoplight at Bickford Avenue and 19th Place is now marked to arrive in 2023, and a more modern traffic light at Pine Avenue and Second Street follows in 2024.
By 2024, Bickford Avenue and Weaver Road could have a new traffic light as well. Intersection design work began in 2019. The new traffic signal would coordinate with the existing traffic signal on Bickford Avenue at the south entrance of the Snohomish Station shopping center.
The lists are adjusted annually to suit city traffic priorities and available funding. The city continually angles for grants for various projects. Many projects have timelines slip on the list.
Other projects are to:
• Modify the intersection at Second Street and Avenue J, and changing First Street west of Avenue D into a one-way eastbound street (2025).
• Connect the Interurban Trail to the Centennial Trail (2026)
• Place a roundabout at 10th Street at Maple Avenue (2026), and
• Upgrade the traffic signal at Second Street and Avenue D (2026)
Reshaping the Second Street corridor is at least four years out, city administrator Steve Schuller said in August. The city first must do extensive utility work underneath. The Second Street project envisions wider sidewalks and laying a median down most of Second Street.
The light on 19th at Bickford would alleviate the long lines of traffic coming off of state Route 9 trying to jump onto Bickford. The city rates the almost-$1 million project as high priority.
The fix at Pine and Second would let the city synchronize the stoplights on Second at Maple, Lincoln and Pine and add a left turn light for Second Street drivers turning north to Pine. The light at Pine and Second right now is too old to do these, he said.
Existing pavement maintenance and sidewalk work top the priority list. City engineer Yosh Monzaki said repaves for 2022 are planned for
Bickford Avenue from Weaver to 30th Street; on Ford
Avenue from Maple to 9th Street; on Van Jan Street north of Ford Avenue, and Holly Vista Drive.
