MONROE — The City Council took a big leap toward developing a future northside park last week, signing a $1.3 million purchase-and-sale agreement to buy land for North Hill Neighborhood Park.
The 5-acre park would be built in the Trombley area near the cross streets of 191st Avenue SE and 134th Street.
It will serve subdivision neighborhoods such as Sweetbriar, Skycroft and Eaglemont.
A city report notes the area north of U.S. 2 has a parks deficit. One of the few city parks north of U.S. 2 is Rainier View Park off of Chain Lake Road.
The city is buying the land using money from the city parks budget, but has applied for $1 million in state grant funding toward the land purchase and has received preliminary board approval that the state will give the grant.
The deal stipulates the mature cedar trees will be kept at the park and it also gives the sellers’ family a say in naming the park. Trombley family heirs approached the city to sell the land.
The city also has an opportunity to buy another 3.2 acres adjacent to this site.
