EVERETT — First-night primary election results show that Don Schwab and Lacey Sauvegeau might be who faces off to represent City Council District 3 in November's general election. Who will advance in Council District 5 is a little murkier.
Schwab had 1,770 votes, or about 73% of the vote, in first-night results Tuesday, Aug. 3. In second place was Lacey Sauvageau, who had 445 votes, or about 18% of the vote, in first-night results. Jacob Vail carried under 10 percent of the vote.
There were about 10,400 potential ballots not yet counted within the district.
Vail was hopeful for a turnaround.
“I’m a wait and see kind of guy,” said Vail, who’s currently third in the City Council District 3 race. Vail is hopeful things will bounce back. He told the Tribune he predicted first-night results would not be strong as he spent $600 total for his campaign, all out of pocket, with little advertising. “I’m very hopeful we’ll bounce back and close that gap” to Lacey Saveageau, who currently has 258 votes more than Vail from first-night results.
Who will advance in Council District 5 was a little murkier. The district includes Silver Lake and the eastern part of the Twin Creeks and Cascade View Neighborhoods.
Ben Zarlingo currently leads the race with 47%, or 842 votes tallied. Candidates Demi Chatters and Kelly Fox were in a close battle for second. Chatters leads Fox by 54 votes.
There were about 10,475 potential ballots not yet counted within the district.
In the school board primary, incumbent Traci Mitchell and challenger Charles Mister, Jr. were leading over third-place Janelle Burke.
Burke trails Mister by 755 votes currently, or five percentage points down.
This race could swing: There were about 71,743 potential ballots not yet counted.
Overall turnout in these races was hovering between 16% to 20%, depending on locality. The District 3 race had logged a turnout of 19% so far as of Tuesday, Aug. 3. Turnout numbers grow over time.
The next tally of ballots will come out Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m.
