Challengers file in Snohomish City Council elections

SNOHOMISH —  Two new faces will be joining the City Council, but nothing is guaranteed on who.
Marc Crawford and public safety commission chair Donna Ray are running for Councilwoman Lynn Schilaty’s open seat.
Meanwhile, a primary runoff will be required for the seat being vacated by Councilwoman Karen Guzak. The contenders are Elizabeth Larsen, Don Baldwin and Judith Kuleta.
Councilman Jason Sanders is running unopposed.
Candidate filing week concluded Friday, May 17.
Kuleta worked as a nurse as well as a fire chief in small cities in Oregon and Alaska. She now is semi-retired; this summer, she’s working at farmers markets.
Larsen sits on the city’s public safety commission and works as a planner in Snohomish County’s public works department. She was a semifinalist for a vacant council seat in 2017 which Sanders was appointed to, and ran for mayor in 2017 but didn’t make it out of the four-way primary.
Baldwin did not respond to a request for biographical information by press time.
Schilaty said earlier this year she was stepping away after 12 years on council. Guzak also served 12 years.
On the Snohomish school board, two incumbents will be keeping their seats unopposed.
On the Snohomish Fire District board, Mark Hintz has three looking to knock him off: Evan Merritt, Darci Wilson and Mike Jorve.
