Finish522 meeting on Wednesday, volunteer openings for the Snohomish parks board and school district sex ed planning committee, and a nice donation to the Maltby Food Bank.


Police, fire updates at council
The public will hear an update on gang efforts from the Police Department and an update on the Fire Department at a City Council committee meeting this Wednesday.
The committee will also work to refine the burglar alarm registry program. The proposal asks to create a registry to ultimately reduce false alarms.
The meeting will be at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 3002 Wetmore Ave., before the main council meeting starts. There is no public comment period for the committee meeting.


Finish 522 meeting Wednesday
MONROE — County leaders and Legislators will meet to discuss the work so far on finding funding to improve traffic flow where Paradise Lake Road intersects state Route 522 and to widen state Route 522 at its chokepoints.
The community meeting will be Wednesday, Jan. 9, at
6:30 p.m. at Monroe City Hall, 806 W. Main St.

 

Parks board deadline extended
SNOHOMISH — The city extended the deadline to apply for the parks board to the end of the month.
Applications are now due to the City Clerk by 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31 at City Hall, 116 Union Ave. Applications are also available through the city’s webpage for boards and commissions.
The board advises the City Council on rules and regulations for the governance and management of all parks, and makes recommendations on policy and fiscal matters related to parks and recreation programs.

 

Maltby Food Bank donation
MALTBY — The Maltby Food Bank reports that Woodinville High School collected 15,389 food items recently in donations, 1,000 more items than it gathered last year.

Sex ed committee taking applications
SNOHOMISH — The Snohomish School District is looking for two community members to serve on the district’s Sexual Health Curriculum Adoption Committee, which is involved
in the district’s sex ed curriculum to be proposed to the board. The committee’s responsibility includes to review staff, parent, student, and community input on recommended curricular resources.

New Swift line undergoing testing
EVERETT — This is not your bus. It’s a test. Community Transit is testing technologies such as automatic passenger counters for its upcoming new bus rapid transit line by having buses stop at each station and let staged “riders” get on and off the bus, simulating actual service. Test buses will display “Testing – No Service” to avoid confusion.
The Swift Green Line from Bothell to Paine Field begins operation on Sunday, March 24. Buses on the line will stop every 10 minutes at 34 stations on the route.

 

Bader selected council president
EVERETT — The City Council president for 2019 will be Councilman Scott Bader, who was council vice president in 2018. The council president sets the weekly agenda and maintains order on the council. The seat is set by nomination and changes regularly: Bader was last president in 2015.
Bader takes over for Councilman Paul Roberts, who presided during 2018 and also in 2010. Councilwoman Judy Tuohy was president in 2017; Councilman Scott Murphy was president in 2016; Councilman Jeff Moore was president in 2013 and 2014. Shannon Affholter presided in 2011 and Ron Gipson most recently presided in 2012. Councilwoman Brenda Stonecipher was president in 2007.

 

School district looking for volunteers for Human Rights
and Equity Team
SNOHOMISH — The Snohomish School District is reconstituting the Human Rights and Equity Team. The focus of the group will be on racial and cultural equity and will include one dozen community members, staff and parents who are interested in pursuing these goals. The team will recommend improvements in school district culture, policies, procedures, decision-making, financial and educational resources in order to better serve all people, especially under-served groups.
The school board called to rebuild the equity team at an October meeting.
The first meeting will be later this month, according to the school district website. The date is to be determined.
