EVERETT HIGH FOOTBALL

Everett coach sees senior-heavy Seagulls team as potent

By MICHAEL
WHITNEY

Everett Seagulls head coach Doug Trainor sees a lot of strength in his seniors this year, which could lead to a perfect storm for a good year for the north Everett team.
“We’re really senior-laden this year,” Trainor said. “It’s exciting, it’s the first time we’ve had that.”
With six captains, multi-sport senior running back Aldo Yeo has taken the lead in mentoring others.
“We finally have a true leader” with Yeo, Trainor said.
Senior linebacker Derek Tran also will be a force on the field.
Yeo and Tran are “not flashy kind of guys, but they’re the guys who win football games.”
Calling shots will be senior quarterback Gabe Maggio, who’s going to be getting his first starting slot. Maggio’s been the backup
quarterback the past three years, last year to the skilled Murdock Rutledge.
“It’s exciting to see him get his chance,” Trainor said.
Another captain, senior lineman Tanner Hollenbeck, who’ll play defensive end and offensive tackle, is among the handful of
Everett players who played on all-conference teams last
year.
Headhunting from the pool of multisport athletes helped build today’s team. The team does not have depth right now, but that could change by way of convincing others to try out.
What the Seagulls lack in depth is strength. “We have big strong kids,” Trainor said.
Yeo, at 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds stands as “the stronger kid we’ve have in the time I’ve been here,” Trainor said.
Yeo is a Seagull through and through, and carries a leadership role in the team.
Powerhouse private high school Archbishop Murphy tried to sign Yeo onto its team two years ago, and Yeo said no. Declining an offer that’s hard to refuse like this speaks to Yeo’s character, Trainor said.
Trainor didn’t want to disclose the strategies the team will use, but the usual offense and defense tactics will be likely used on the field.
In the four years he’s been head coach here, the season results steadily improved.
The Seagulls went 5-5 (league) in the past two years.
“I think our kids are tired of being 5-5,” Trainor said. In the offseason, he saw players giving dedication and attention to the game.
The Seagulls’ first in-town game of the season Friday, Sept 8 is the annual “Battle for Broadway” against the Cascade Bruins starting at 7 p.m. at Everett Memorial Stadium, 3900 Broadway.
