Monroe father charged with hate crime pleads not guilty

MONROE —  The Monroe father who faces a hate crime charge pleaded not guilty at his Jan. 19 arraignment.
Will Cunningham, 39, threatened a Black student with death threats and racial epithets while he was on speakerphone during a Nov. 10 confrontation between students at Monroe High School, and later intimidated the Black teen at his workplace by following him around, court documents say.
Cunningham’s jury trial is scheduled for April 1.
His daughter used the N-word toward the Black male multiple times during the Nov. 10 confrontation in Monroe High’s parking lot.
She called her dad and told him the Black male put his hands on her. Over the phone, Cunningham told the Black male that “if I see you I’ll kill you,” according to court documents.
Three weeks later, the father, daughter and her boyfriend began harassing the Black male at his workplace. They all received trespass notices from the store.
Court documents say the confrontation originated earlier in the day when the daughter bumped into another student.
