Averill Field feature ideas shown to public

SNOHOMISH —  Park planners envision the green space at Third Street and Pine Avenue as a place for gatherings, music and play.
A consulting firm displayed three Averill Field park concepts last week based on public survey feedback.
Each concept has a covered bandshell in the northeast corner for small concerts
and community theater.
The large lawn would face the bandshell, creating a definitive space for laying on the grass when there are shows and playing on the grass when there aren’t.
A covered space called a pavilion would anchor the park as a centerpiece. Depending on the design, the pavilion could have room for 100 to 400 people.
There would also be a bigger playground, and the plans call for a court for pickleball (it’s similar to tennis) and locations for exercise. A multi-sport court could be worked into the plan, too.
The Tillicum Kiwanis Playground for small children will be removed. The city says the playground equipment there, from the 1990s, will fall out of safety standards soon.
The skate park and the Boys & Girls Club are staying.
A paved trail rings the park in the concepts, and a path will connect the park to the Centennial Trail nearby.
Parks planners are looking to refine the plans with a second survey posted online. It’s at www.surveymonkey.com/R/AverillField2
The city’s consulting firm, Otak Inc., will use the responses to develop a final concept to be presented to the public at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 28.
Once the master plan is complete by summer, construction may start as soon as next spring, a city official said at last week’s park board meeting.

Having a bandshell and a pavilion is to call back to the 1800s, design consultant Curtis LaPierre said. The landscaping and buildings will reflect the Pacific Northwest using stone or wood.
Planners are working from a canvas that is about 1.2 acres.
“It’s the size of a neighborhood park but functions as a community park,” LaPierre said.
