EVERETT — Silvertips hockey will be back on the ice starting Saturday, March 20 for a shortened 24-game Western Hockey League schedule. There will be just under two months of games for the division.
The Everett AquaSox, meanwhile, start their 37th year in May. The minor-league Sox have retained their affiliation with the MLB's Seattle Mariners. The team will play a full season that stretches into September.
The Tips open their season at Angel of the Winds Arena downtown with the puck dropping soon after 6:05 p.m. against the Spokane Chiefs.
Everett Community College student dorms will become basecamp for a number of Silvertip players under an arrangement set up with the college. The arrangement is to ensure an insulated environment to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the college and the team said in a joint press release. Many players have flown in from out of the county to play on the semi-pro team.
The team is talking with KRKO 1380-AM for radio coverage. The games will be available online through the free WHL Live streaming package. See the team website at www.everettsilvertips.com to get access.
AquaSox shrink competitors
A reorganization of the minor league system in 2020 saw the league in which the AquaSox played close down. The AquaSox and five others from the old league got placed in the new High-A West league of six teams. Two of the Sox's prior competitors, the Salem-Keizer (Oregon) Volcanoes and Boise Hawks, are out.
