Cassie Franklin to run for second mayoral term

EVERETT — It is no exact surprise Mayor Cassie Franklin formally announced last week that she’s running for re-election.
Franklin has had campaign registration paperwork filed with the state since October.
She is the first high-profile candidate to enter the 2021 mayoral race. Residents Frederick Heater and Janelle Nixon-Burke also have registered campaigns with the state.
Nixon-Burke ran for the Everett School Board in 2019 and 2017. Heater was the first to announce; he sent a notice to the press in late 2019.
There are almost six months to go before the election filing period opens to officially be a candidate on the ballot.
Franklin has early endorsements from City Council members Jeff Moore, Liz Vogeli and Paul Roberts. Other endorsements include prior councilwoman Ethel McNeal and four sitting County Council members: Megan Dunn, Stephanie Wright, Jared Mead and Nate Nehring.
Franklin has also stockpiled $38,000 worth of campaign contributions so far.
The largest contribution is $2,000 from The Boeing Co.’s political action committee.
Franklin was elected to the City Council in 2015 before running for mayor in 2017 in a tight race against Councilwoman Judy Tuohy. The race was for the seat vacated by longtime former mayor Ray Stephanson.
