Trash co. fixing service delays

Missed garbage cans lingered in front of hundreds of homes in Snohomish and Monroe in July after trash hauler Republic Services experienced a staffing shortage it is acting to remedy.
Close to 800 customers were impacted with late same-day service or one-day-late yard waste, recycling and trash collections, Republic Services’ local general manager, Corby Stephens, said in an email.
Stephens said 95 percent of missed pickups were completed the next day, and the company is working diligently to solve the staffing shortage.
Republic added four new positions in the past two months and is working to hire two to three more drivers for the Monroe and Snohomish areas, Stephens said. Monroe Mayor Geoffrey Thomas said his trash was personally missed for two weeks and had spoken to officials in Edmonds and Sultan who reported similar issues in their cities.
In Snohomish, city officials also received complaints and scheduled an August meeting with Republic to monitor the issue said finance director Debbie Burton.
The manager from Republic said it has temporarily shifted three to four drivers to the area to mitigate the shortage.
“Currently, we have 13 drivers and until recently, it has been a stable number, with increases in overall populations starting to bloom,” Stephens said. The company expects continued growth in the area and is hiring.
Drivers earn $20 to $30 per hour as a starting wage. Compensation packages bring driver wages close to six figures when including retirement contributions and other benefits, Stephens said.
Republic has contracted to service Snohomish since 2003 and Monroe since 2010.
Anyone who wants to learn about the company can attend the Monroe City Council meeting Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. when Republic Services will present. The meeting will be at the fire district’s Station No. 31 Training Room, 163 Village Court, because the City Council Chambers are being renovated.
