Vital bridges along Mukilteo Boulevard to get seismic fixes
EVERETT — Three bridges along Mukilteo Boulevard will receive attention in the coming years to overcome vulnerabilities to earthquakes.
The city is planning a full bridge replacement at the Edgewater Bridge and a seismic retrofit for the Maple Heights Bridge, and has a majority of the funding secured through the state.
A third bridge, the Merrill and Ring Creek Bridge, will also receive attention.
The bridges are a critical way out for residents in the Boulevard Bluffs Neighborhood because if two of the three are destroyed in an earthquake then parts of the neighborhood could become isolated. The boulevard receives more than 6,000 vehicles a day and its bridges cross over large ravines and steep hillsides, from a 2017 vulnerability study the city commissioned.
Construction work on the Edgewater Bridge might begin by 2020.
This bridge is along Mukilteo Boulevard at the western city limits as acent to Mukilteo spanning Edgewater Creek. It was built in 1946 and the city describes the bridge as “a vital link for the Boulevard Bluffs neighborhood.”
The new replacement bridge structure will have two vehicle lanes, bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides.
The Maple Heights Bridge near Harborview Park spans Glenwood Creek. Retrofits on the Maple Heights Bridge could begin in early 2020.
The Merrill and Ring Creek Bridge goes over Merrill and Ring Creek along Mukilteo Boulevard.
Merrill and Ring Creek Bridge was built in 1931 and rehabilitated in 1980, according to the specialist website bridgehunter.com
The state Department of Transportation awarded the city $12 million for the Edgwater Bridge replacement and $1.27 million for the Maple Heights Bridge seismic retrofits during the 2017 funding round. The $1.27 million could cover the full estimated seismic retrofit cost identified by Trantech Engineering, a consultant firm.
The Edgewater Bridge full replacement cost could pencil out to upwards of $14 million, based on a 2017 estimate from Trantech. Regardless of seismic vulnerabilities, the Edgewater Bridge is listed as functionally obsolete.
