Vandal damages Ferguson Park slide, Hill Park benches

A vandal took a chunk out of a slide at Ferguson Park.

SNOHOMISH — One or more vandals struck, literally, at city parks April 7 or 8, taking a hatchet to a slide at Ferguson Park and breaking shelter benches at Hill Park.
It wasn’t the first time.
Someone took an axe to Ferguson Park’s yellow slide last year, said Mike Johnson, the city’s parks and facilities manager. Earlier this year, someone felled two trees at Morgantown Park.
Parks staff have already repaired the benches, but eliminating the gashes in the slide is more challenging. If the green slide can’t be repaired, it could cost $2,500 per section or $7,000 to replace it entirely, Johnson said.
The Parks Department does employ game cameras to address vandalism though it did not capture any footage of the recent crimes.
The department has also just staffed a seasonal position and will have a weekend-working employee at parks beginning April 21.
The parks used to have six-foot high chain link fences at the parks along with gates that were closed at night, but both were eliminated years ago. Johnson said the gates prevented police officers from accessing the parks so they requested their removal.
Parks users are encouraged to call 911 if they see any suspicious activity in the parks.
