Help volunteer to build children's bikes

Sharing Wheels Community Bike Shop seeks volunteers who can come help fix bicycles for Christmas House on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. through December at the shop. People are asked to pre-register their time to volunteer at www.sharingwheels.org

Initial election results
- SNOHOMISH CITY ELECTIONS --- Redmon, Merrill, Flynn, Burke and Guzak currently lead their races.
Trailing are Kartak, Mills, Zimmerman, Countryman and Dana in first-night election results.
If the results stick, Linda Redmon becomes Snohomish's mayor, ousting John Kartak, while incumbents Larry Countryman and Steve Dana will be bounced off council.
Councilman Felix Neals ran unopposed.
- FOR SNOHOMISH SCHOOL DISTRICT, incumbent Shaunna Ballas is just ahead of Christina Ridges.
Jay Hagen has fended off write-in challenger Sarah Ricci.
- FOR SNOHOMISH FIRE DISTRICT 4, incumbent Jim Schmoker leads over challenger Merritt Weese.
- IN EVERETT CITY COUNCIL ELECTIONS, First-time candidate Mary Fosse of the Delta Neighborhood currently leads over established incumbent Paul Roberts in the Council District 1 race.
Elsewhere, Paula Rhyne leads Greg Lineberry for District 2.
Incumbent Liz Vogeli leads Tommie Rubatino for District 4.
Ben Zarlingo leads Demi Chatters for District 5.
Don Schwab appears to have locked in District 3.
Mayor Cassie Franklin has locked in re-election.
- SNOHOMISH REGIONAL FIRE & RESCUE LEVY PASSING: Voters in Lake Stevens, Monroe, Clearview, Cathcart, Maltby and more that comprise Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue's jurisdiction currently have given more than 50 percent approval to its request to return the levy to $1.50. The vote is currently 57% in favor in first-night election results with 17,000 ballots counted so far.
- IN MONROE SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD RACES, Jeremiah Campbell currently is leading his race to retain his seat, while two others he was running together as a group with are trailing. Currently, Sarah Johnson and Mary Reule lead over Janine Burkhardt and Molly Barnes by narrow margins.
- IN MONROE CITY COUNCIL ELECTIONS, incumbent Kevin Hanford leads over challenger Amber Mehta, and incumbent Kirk Scarboro leads over challenger Jake Walker. Two other seats went unchallenged and will be taken by Tami Kinney and Kyle Fisher. Mayor Geoffrey Thomas will continue.
- IN A PORT OF EVERETT ELECTION, Port of Everett incumbent commissioner David Simpson currently leads over challenger Scott Murphy.

SNOHOMISH — An independent state appeals board heard rebellious barber Bob Martin’s case last week. approved interim zoning regulations to limit certain business types in the city’s commercial zones.
The list of potentially undesirable uses for Snohomish's commercially zoned areas includes: RV Parks, churches, warehouses, trucking services, farm product hubs, cargo services, equipment rental shops, cemeteries and self-storage places.

SNOHOMISH — The city is proposing to allow multi-family housing on a portion of Homestead Park off of Ludwig Road. The site could be used to encourage affordable housing. Also, the Kla Ha Ya Village shopping plaza seeks to expand its footprint.
UPDATE: The City Council, on Nov. 2, declined a request from Kla Ha Ya Village to let the city study a rezone to suit its expansion plan to reach Avenue B after residents on Avenue B pleaded to council to prevent their street from being affected.

EVERETT — Mayor Cassie Franklin’s $446.5 million 2022 budget proposal continues to take novel approaches toward keeping the budget balanced, and adds to specific focuses on climate change, homelessness and equity. But to keep city finances sustainable, Franklin will be seeking a city ballot measure next year to increase property taxes more than usual.
The budget also adds resources for addressing homelessness and benefitting the library.

Tribune wins journalism awards
Tribune editor Michael Whitney took two first-place awards in the annual 2021 Washington Newspaper Publishers Association statewide contest.
One was in the general short feature reporting category for an April 2020 cover story highlighting Zion Lutheran Church’s large renovation.
The other was in the business feature reporting category for an April 2020 story about Piccadilly Circus Pub on Snohomish’s First Street.
The competition group was for community newspapers statewide with more than 9,500 circulation. The Kentucky Press Association judged the contest. The results were announced Friday, Oct. 8.
